Choral Vespers for Advent

The Schola Cantorum of Gettysburg leads this solemn, spirited opening of the season with music from four centuries and plenty of singing by the assembly

FESTIVAL CHORAL VESPERS FOR ADVENT TO LIGHT UP THE DARKNESS DECEMBER 1st  

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING THE MESSIAH

Music, Gettysburg’s! Schola Cantorum will begin the season of Advent and light up the winter darkness with a festive choral setting for vespers on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at 7:30 pm. The vesper service, which is free and open to the public,will be held in the chapel of United Lutheran Seminary, 147 Seminary Ridge,Gettysburg.

Featured in the choral vespers is the 25-voice Schola Cantorum of Gettysburg, under the direction of Stephen P. Folkemer. The heart of the service will be the story of the Annunciation to Mary of Jesus’ birth, interspersed with Baroque music related to the text. The service will also include choral music ranging from a modern interpretation of a 9th century chant to an anthem recently composed by Folkemer. The service will also feature singing by the entire congregation.

The Rev. Dr. Mark Oldenburg,retired worship professor of United Lutheran Seminary, will officiate at the one hour festival choral evening prayer.

“This is the gift you can open early,” said Dana Witt, member of the Schola Cantorum and of Music,Gettysburg!’s steering committee. She continued, “there is no better way to open up the Advent season than to treat yourself to this feast of musical prayer.”
